"Love your country and not Moroccan thieves!" - Right-wing populist rhetoric and its effects on in- and out-groups
Right-wing populist actors are well known for violating the rules of political correctness, using a taboo breaking language style, and provoking between the national ingroup and non-national outgroups. This literature review focuses on how right-wing populist rhetoric affects different social groups of a society. The literature reviewed indicates that right-wing populist campaigning offers status enhancing effects on parts of the national ingroup, while implicit and explicit stereotypes and prejudice against the targeted outgroups are reinforced. By doing so, right-wing populists are creating a vicious circle of raising outgroup prejudice, social exclusion, and self-fulfilling prophecies. Overcoming this vicious circle is one of the main tasks that democratic counterparts, civic society, and the media are facing in this day and age.
